Campus Safety: Highlighting the Escort Service

Security at Salus
Salus University’s Office of Safety and Security and many of the services they provide are well known by students and faculty alike, but few may know about one of the easiest and precautionary services offered: the safety and security escort service.

First started under former director Wayne Pancza, now continued under current director Gary Hughes, the escort service is to enhance the safety and comfort of the entire Salus community.

Students and faculty are encouraged to utilize the service if they feel a need for an escort to another location on campus or to their car, with no questions asked.

Kerri Dougherty, administrative assistant, has done her share of escorting. “I have escorted individuals and have found that some just like company to walk with as they leave the work or study place for the remainder of the day,” she said.

The service is provided by 20 members of the security department and is available from the time the Elkins Park and The Eye Institute (TEI) buildings open through closing. Those who would like to contact the escort service can do so by calling the general safety and security extension 1401 at the Elkins Park campus; extension 6006/6009 at TEI or can visit in-person at one of the security desks.

“Regardless of the reason people may present (voluntarily), the safety and security department will never ask why you need a safety escort,” said Dougherty, “We are here for the community and to ensure the overall safety for all.”
