James "Blue" Bickford has been in the field of vision impairments for 40 years.  His experiences include classroom teaching at the Oak Hill School for the Blind, the Alabama School for the Blind and the Arizona Schools for the Deaf and the Blind.  For 10 years he was the Principal at the Arizona school prior to completing doctoral studies at Portland State University in 1994.  An additional 11 years were spent as the Director of Educational Services at the Washington School for the Blind prior to assuming the coordinator position in the Program in Visual Impairments at Portland State University.  Research interests include literacy, transition skills, social skills and the use of distance education for the preparation of teachers for students with visual impairments.
