Silvia Correa-Torres, MEd, PhD

Dr. Silvia M. Correa-Torres is faculty in the School of Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Correa-Torres is Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) and a teacher of individuals with visual impairment (TVI). She is originally from Puerto Rico, where she received her undergraduate degree in special education and provided services to individuals with visual impairments, including those with additional disabilities, for several years before moving to the mainland to pursue her graduate degrees. Dr. Correa-Torres has been working in the field of blindness and deafblindness, in different capacities, for over 18 years. Dr. Correa-Torres has taught in a variety of settings and in different cultures, and has presented in international conferences around the world. Her current research involves the use of description in high stakes assessments, diversity and visual impairment, decision-making thought processes of pre-service O&M Specialists, and communication and social issues for individuals with deafblindness among others.
