“Day in the Life” Series

It’s important for prospective students to have an idea of what a “Day in the Life” of a master’s or doctorate level education is like, especially here at Salus. Many ask, “What is the ‘typical’ day like for a Salus student?” While there is no way to specifically answer that, given the variety of interests of the students here as well as the expectations and curriculum within the various programs, the University’s “Day in the Life” series can give a prospective student a sense of what a typical day looks like in each year – clinical and didactic – within each of our programs.

The trill of that iPhone alarm jolts me awake. 7:30 a.m. - it's a new day. I lumber out of bed, make my way to get ready for the day with a fresh shower, brushing my teeth, and skin care. What comes next is probably my favorite part of the day - a hot cup of Nespresso coffee. A sort of time to relax and destress before the day starts and my mind races with thoughts of what to study today for boards, what classes I have today and tomorrow, and what I have to prepare for in and out of school.

My name is Mikenzie Mikkelson. I completed my undergraduate degree at Black Hills State University in South Dakota. My degree was chemistry with an emphasis in biology and I also received a math minor. I chose chemistry because it was a great mix of my two favorite subjects, math and science! Chemistry with an emphasis in biology enabled me to take classes I love and knock out most of the prerequisites required to apply to physician assistant (PA) school!
