Friday the 13th
was nothing but good luck for Annie Govan ‘20OD, this year’s winner of the Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) Quiz Bowl. The annual event was held on Friday, April 13, at the Hafter Student Community Center. Govan had tough competition against nine other optometry students, but came out on top and will represent Salus/PCO at Optometry’s Meeting next year in St. Louis, Mo.
Govan admitted she was nervous about competing, but the audience most likely couldn’t tell, especially as she answered questions with ease and even donned a fun hat during round three to break some of the tension. “I feel I was prepared for Quiz Bowl because of the rigor of the optometry program here at Salus,” she said. Govan was pleasantly surprised many of the questions tested their knowledge on recently reviewed material and she felt it was a pleasure to compete. “I applaud all of my classmates for having the courage to compete. They all performed extremely well,” she said.
Last year’s PCO Quiz Bowl winner, Celeste Gomez ‘19OD
, will compete against contestants from 23 other schools at the Essilor Optometry Student Bowl on Thursday, June 21 during Optometry’s Meeting at the 121st
American Optometric Association (AOA) Congress and 48th
American Optometric Student Association Conference in Denver, Co. Gomez is preparing for the competition by continuing to study for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) Part I. She is also learning everything she can from her externship experience. The two wish each other the best of luck: Govan knows Gomez will represent Salus/PCO well; likewise, Gomez extends congratulations to this year’s Quiz Bowl champion and can’t wait to see how she does next year.
