Harry Kaplan Bench Dedication
Last Friday, family, friends, and former colleagues of Dr. Harry Kaplan gathered for a retirement celebration and surprise bench dedication in honor of his 52 years of service to Salus University and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO).

Each dedicated bench conveys a compelling story taken from Salus University history, and Dr. Stuart Cohn, OD ’67, had many to tell of Dr. Kaplan. Dr. Cohn led the dedication ceremony, noting, “Harry has always been kind, thoughtful, and humble - he was quite the mentor.” After winning the annual “I” Care Raffle, created by Dr. Kaplan in 1985, Dr. Cohn elected to give back and recognize Dr. Kaplan’s contributions to the University and optometry profession as a whole. “It’s my pleasure to dedicate this bench to Salus University in Harry’s name, as his leadership, vision, and enthusiasm are valued and respected by all.”

Dr. Harry Kaplan's Retirement Celebration
A retirement celebration was held immediately following the bench dedication ceremony, where guests shared heartwarming stories and expressed immense gratitude to Dr. Kaplan for his thoughtful guidance and leadership. Dr. Susan Oleszewski, vice-president for Institutional Advancement and Community Engagement, and Dr. Thomas Lewis, professor at Salus PCO, spoke to the impact Dr. Kaplan had on the optometry profession and impression he left on the PCO community.  Salus University Alumni Association president, Dr. Dennis Lyons ’73, jovially described Dr. Kaplan as “a neighborhood gentlemen and true professional”, noting “There should be a chapter in the history of contact lens on Harry's dedication to the profession.” Janice Mignogna, director of the College’s Irving Bennett Practice Management Center, said, “We worked together for 23 years on practice appraisals, and we were a team. Harry, you’re the energizer bunny, you’ll go on and on. Thank you.”

Again, the Salus PCO community thanks you, Dr. Kaplan, for your years of dedication, friendship, and service.  Your influence of support, encouragement, and validation for the past 52 years has left a mark on students, faculty, and staff that will be long-lasting.
