Fourth Annual Salus Scoop

At the start of each school year, Salus Scoop offers new and current students the chance to broaden their social and academic involvement during an evening of fun-filled, informative activities. The fourth annual event, organized by the Campus Activities Committee, brought Hollywood to Elkins Park with movie-themed booths for each campus organization and each class council.

Students wandered through a plethora of organizations, stopping at themed tables such as The Lion King, Hercules and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, to learn more about some of the extracurricular activities available at Salus. Brave faculty and staff members Dr. Melissa Trego, dean of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Dr. Lindsay Bondurant, clinical director of the Pennsylvania Ear Institute, and Dr. James Caldwell, dean of Student Affairs, took a turn in the dunk tank to test the students’ and staff‘s athletic skills. Attendees enjoyed tasty treats from two food trucks - Lil Pop Shop and Undrgrnd Donuts – as well as a spread from the University’s caterer CulinArt. Raffles prizes, including a FitBit, Bose noise-cancelling headphones, and more, were available for a few lucky winners.

Student Council president Marni Robbins ’19OD believes Salus Scoop is a great way for new students to become fully engrained in the Salus community and all that it has to offer

“Salus Scoop gives students an opportunity to see the diverse community we have at Salus,” she said. “They can find something they want to get involved with, which helps them learn to better manage their time and makes them more well-rounded individuals.”

Salus Scoop Dr. Trego Dunk TankStudent Council vice president and chair of the Campus Activities Committee Kaitlyn Kolzow ’19OD agrees the event helps students find their place at Salus and allows them to meet and interact more with students from other programs.

“University-wide events like this really help foster the idea of One Salus - the idea that the University works as a whole, with the one major goal of striving toward better healthcare for all,” she said. “Students use this event to get themselves involved, whether that is in state or national associations, honor societies, or identity groups. This involvement helps foster leadership and increase knowledge, all of which will help us become stronger clinicians.”

Salus Scoop was envisioned by Monae Kelsey, associate director of Student Engagement and assistant director of Admissions, and Student Council vice president at the time Alex St. Pierre AuD ’16 in 2014. They wanted to develop an event to promote student engagement, but wanted it to be more than a simple fair for clubs and organizations.

“In order to elevate the event, we decided to have a thematic experience, which included having the various booths compete in a best decorated contest, hold activities at booths, and disseminate information about their respective organizations,” Kelsey said. “In addition, we had a live band, DJ, and dunk tank for entertainment. We also had food trucks and catering from CulinArt for some good eats.”

Previous themes for the event include the Caribbean, Stars and Stripes, and the Salus Olympics. Since its inception, the Campus Activities Committee has hosted the event.
