New artwork graces the walls of the D’Arrigo Family Gallery at the Hafter Student Community Center on the Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, campus of Salus University. The exhibit, which debuted March 25, 2023, features the work of artists Demetra Tassiou and Corinne Dieterle.
“These are more two solo shows than one two-person show,” said Elynne Rosenfeld, curator of the gallery.
Dieterle began painting at age 46, and while she has benefited from the tutoring of several instructors, she is largely self-taught. Her autodidactic art history journey, love of color, textures, the landscape, beauty found in common objects, as well as the human figure, provides her with limitless opportunities to transpose a representation of what inspires her with brush and paint.
“Corinne’s work quotes heavily from the art history she so loves,” said Rosenfeld. “I see bits of Dutch Interior in some, especially the windowsill paintings, and interiors with people engaged in solitary activity within the same picture plane. But I also see the stylized technique that quotes artists such as Matisse and Henri Rousseau.”
Tassiou’s work is an exploration of the relationship between nature and man-made objects. She is fascinated by colors and movements of birds and butterflies as well as the construction of airplanes and seeks to combine those references in her art. She uses acrylic techniques, paper collages and color ink on wood panels to create colorful objects that float above earth’s horizon.
“I am intrigued by Demetra’s bold yet nuanced use of color, texture and composition in her abstract, organic, fanciful forms,” said Rosenfeld. “What I like about this display is that rather than offering passive comparisons between artists and their styles, these two artists actively bring entirely different vantage points to be digested and thought about.”
The artists’ work will be on display at the gallery through May 30, 2023. Guests are asked to sign in at the Hafter Center security station prior to admission to the D’Arrigo Gallery.
