Program Spotlight: Biomedicine Programs

The Biomedicine programs on Drexel University’s Elkins Park campus – which will have a name change in the fall of 2026 to Clinical and Translational Research and Innovation - allows students to specialize in health sciences, including but not limited to, Optometry, Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Rehabilitation Sciences, Biological Science and Clinical Medicine.

Two researchers in Biomed pic2The University offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research degree where students will be trained and challenged to use effective means of reviewing literature; find and master the most specific and sensitive research techniques; produce and manage data with sensitivity to quality assurance; understand ethical and confidentiality mandates; and publish findings using methods that maintain the integrity of the research and its interpretation.

“The professors and faculty in the program are always willing to discuss and help guide you, which is really a great asset to the program,” said Brianna Brim, PhD ‘22, MOT, OTR/L, CPAM, CLIPP. “I was able to secure a wonderful mentor early on who was great at helping me develop my research question and design, which was integral for success.”

The program offers flexible learning options, including a distance learning/online option and an on-campus in Elkins Park option.

The distance learning option meets the needs of the unique international and domestic student markets. In these degree programs, students take all courses online and link research projects with established mentors in successful research laboratories within the student’s community.

The online learning format is particularly beneficial to those who are mid-level faculty members and require a PhD for academic advancement and professional growth to remain embedded in their communities. Most students continue to maintain full-time employment while completing this program in about four years.

Students selecting the Elkins Park, Pennsylvania on-campus option will need to relocate to the Philadelphia area. With this option courses are presented on-campus and research projects are arranged with established mentors in successful research laboratories either at the University or other sites in the Philadelphia community.

“The PhD in Biomedicine program is well-designed, and it is suitable for different health care professionals,” said Robert Andersson, MSc ‘10, PhD ‘18, FAAO. “The curriculum was rigorous but well structured, allowing me to work concurrently when studying. This approach offered me a flexible learning experience without a compromised outcome.”
