The American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) hosted their second annual Cycle-4-Sight event on Thursday, October 13 in conjunction with World Sight Day. The event’s purpose was two-fold – to help spread awareness across the globe about blindness and vision impairment and to raise necessary funds for Optometry Giving Sight. More than 600 million people around the world are blind or visually impaired because they do not have access to essential vision care and glasses. Optometry Giving Sight, as an organization, works to establish health centers, train local optometrists and deliver eye care to those in need. Both of these projects have transformed lives for thousands of individuals.
And, Salus students, faculty and staff were proud to join in on this important initiative. Four instructors from our Hafter Student Community Center offered cycling classes throughout the day in 30 minute increments. Leading up to the cycle challenge, AOSA raised funds through straight donations, selling Optometry Giving Sight t-shirts, and water bottles while everyone riding also received a donor wristband. Every participant had the opportunity to earn SOSH hours, Salus Cup points and entry into a raffle with prizes including two iPads with 16 Gz of data courtesy of HOYA, one Digital Clear Field Lens courtesy of Volk, and more!
In addition to Cycle-Thon, AOSA also paired up with the athletics committee for a knockout basketball tournament.
To date, the students have raised over $600 but hope to surpass their collective goal of $2,500. With one more event scheduled, fundraising will continue through the end of October.
