Second Annual Dean’s Winterfest

With the onset of frigid winter temperatures and the start of the spring semester both in full swing; students were unfortunately already feeling a little blue. Thankfully, the University’s Student Ambassadors were making preparations for the Second Annual Dean’s Winterfest.

Dean's Winterfest 2018 Group Picture“Winterfest is an opportunity to reunite with friends after a long winter break and is a great stress reliever from graduate school,” Margi Shah ‘20OD, president of the University’s Student Ambassadors said. “Last year was the first year planning such an event, and it turned out quite well so we’re aiming for an even bigger and better event this year!”

And, they did just that.

For two hours on the afternoon of Friday, January 19, students transformed the Hafter Student Community Center into a “Frosted Forest” complete with lit white and green fir trees, snowballs and a winter scene playing continuously in the background. Students were adorned in their ugliest of sweaters ready to be featured in the ugly sweater runway show, which was the day’s main event.

Other highlights from the event were holiday trivia, festive games, a wintery prop-filled photo booth, and filling out New Year’s resolution cards to hang on the “resolution tree.” Both students and staff alike were also given the opportunity to exhibit their artistic skills in cookie decorating and crafting contests.

Congratulations to the contest winners:

  • 1st Place - Ugly Sweater Contest: Payton Burke '21AUD
  • 1st Place - Cookie Decorating Contest: Madison Dunning '21OD
  • 2nd Place - Cookie Decorating Contest: Kara Rhine '21OD

The winners went home with Amazon, Starbucks and Target gift cards. The afternoon concluded with a lip sync battle where students paired up to showcase their beautiful, talented voices.

In the season of giving, Winterfest continued the tradition of being a drop-off spot for the Annual Winter Coat drive, hosted by the Hafter Center staff.  Proceeds from this drive benefitted the organization One Warm Coat, a national non-profit that works to provide a free, warm coat to any person in need. Donations are being taken through the end of the month.
