Dr. Scheiman Receives Honorary Award

Dr. Scheiman being presented an honorary degreeIn the optometric or biomedicine academic world, Mitchell Scheiman, OD, PhD, FAAO is well-known, and is often a draw for those who seek education from world-class faculty.

As a nationally recognized expert on convergence insufficiency, Dr. Scheiman will be presented with an honorary degree from the New England College of Optometry (NECO), his alma mater, for his collective contributions to his profession. “It’s hard to believe that I graduated almost 45 years ago,” said Dr. Scheiman. “I can still remember the excitement of the very first day of class.”

Dr. Scheiman and one other NECO alumnus will be honored during NECO’s 125th Commencement ceremony on May 19, 2019 at the Boston Symphony Hall in Boston, Mass.

Graduating from NECO in 1975, Dr. Scheiman is currently the director of Graduate Programs in Biomedicine, the dean of Research, and a professor in the University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

“It is an honor for me to be receiving this honorary degree from my alma mater and recognition of my work as an optometric educator and researcher,” said Dr. Scheiman.

This honorary degree joins many other accolades Dr. Scheiman has received including:

  • 2017: American Academy of Optometry Foundation: The Glenn A. Fry Lecture Award is given annually to a distinguished scientist or clinician scientist in recognition of the quality, significance, impact, and relevance to optometry of his or her current research contributions.
  • 2015: Dr. Jerry P. Davidoff Vision Care Award - American Optometric Association (AOA) Vision Rehabilitation Section (VRS) Council and Distinguished SUNY Resident Alumni Award                          
  • Heart of America Contact Lens Society Vision Service Award presented annually to an individual or group who exhibits extraordinary dedication and untiring service to the profession of optometry
  • Woodruff Distinguished Lecture Series - School of Optometry, University of Waterloo
  • Skeffington Award for Excellence in Writing. COVD Annual Conference
