ICYMI Summer 22 Pic1Pet Therapy: Students had a well-deserved break from classwork and relaxed with some furry four-legged friends on July 21. The event brought therapy dogs from Comfort Caring Canines to the Learning Resource Center (LRC) for a quick lunch break for students to grab some free snacks, mingle, and pet some adorable pups. 

Online Learning and Digital Eye Strain Lunch and Learn: The COVID-19 pivot took our virtual world to a new level. The safety, efficiency and convenience of Zoom and other platforms for learning and communicating took a toll on everyone's vision, which could result in digital eye strain and dry eye. Dr. Liat Gantz of Hadassah Academic College in Jerusalem studied the impact online learning had on college students in Israel and the U.S. during the pandemic. On Thursday, June 9, She shared the results of her study, the implications of Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) and the ways in which clinicians can educate patients to alleviate their symptoms.

Hearts in Motion (HIM) Events: HIM was busy this summer fundraising for their mission trip to Guatemala to help provide quality medical care to people in need throughout Central and South America.

  • Medical Supply Drive: HIM collected medical supplies for distribution to patients on their trip, which was hosted from August 5 - 18. 

  • Virtual Popcorn Fundraiser: HIM sold popcorn that could be delivered right to your door. The virtual fundraiser lasted from July 27 - 31.

  • “Friends” Trivia Night: On June 14 at 1910 Bar & Grille in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania HIM hosted an event for Salus students to show off their trivia knowledge of the hit television show “Friends.” 20% of dinner sales went towards HIM’s trip when students mentioned Salus at checkout.

  • MaGerk’s Fundraiser: 15% of each customer’s total bill on July 28 went towards HIM when they told the server they were there for a Salus University event. 

  • Humpty’s Fundraiser: 15% of Humpty’s Dumplings sales on June 9 went towards HIM and their mission trip.

CPPD and SAGAS Pride Mixer: The Center for Personal & Professional Development (CPPD) and the Sexuality & Gender Alliance at Salus (SAGAS) hosted a Pride Mixer for those who self-identify as queer and allies in the Cafe where they offered snacks, trivia and karaoke on Saturday, June 25.

ICYMI Summer 22 Pic2Physician Assistant Labs: Students in the Physician Assistant (PA) Studies Program participated in the annual pediatric workshop as an experiential component of the physical diagnosis course. Students received instruction in various age-appropriate well-child exams demonstrated by PA faculty members and assessed developmental milestones, practiced history-taking skills, performed physical examinations and provided anticipatory guidance counseling. PA students also engaged in a vascular lab as a part of their Advanced Clinical Skills 3 course, where they learned how to do venipuncture, insert and start IVs and perform arterial blood gasses.

Exercise with Erica: On Thursday, July 28 Exercise with Erica was hosted in the LRC with free snacks included. Erica Enarusai is a third year Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) student and is also a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) certified personal trainer and professional natural bodybuilder. 

Contact Lens Club - Euclid Ortho-K Workshop: On July 7, the contact lens club hosted a dinner and presentation on myopia management by Dr. Lau from Euclid, a company that designs orthokeratology lenses. Following the presentation, PCO/Salus students participated in an interactive workshop in the Clinical Skills Lab.  

Sweet Treat Celebrations: 

ICYMI Summer 22 Pic3Salus Scoop: On Thursday, September 1, 2022 Salus Scoop was hosted in the Hafter Student Community Center parking lot. Salus Scoop is an annual event to give first-year students an opportunity to learn more about the University’s clubs and organizations and gives them an opportunity to get involved. The event offered food, entertainment, prizes and was a great place for first years to see all that the Salus community has to offer.
