April is National Limb Loss Awareness Month, which honors individuals living with limb loss and limb difference while promoting education, advocacy, and inclusion.
National Limb Awareness Month was started by the Amputee Coalition – a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering and supporting people affected by limb loss and limb difference – that brings national attention to the experiences, challenges, and achievements of people who have lost a limb due to injury, illness, or congenital conditions. It encourages people to learn about limb loss prevention, rehabilitation, and the importance of accessibility and support systems that empower individuals to lead active, fulfilling lives.
“At Drexel O&P, every day is Limb Loss Awareness Month,” said J. Chad Duncan, PhD, CRC, CPO, LPO, Fulbright Specialist, chair and program director of the Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) department at Drexel University’s Elkins Park campus. “This special occasion gives us a chance to not only promote but celebrate what people, young and old, can achieve. This day truly emphasizes the people, prevention, and brings greater awareness to the real challenges individuals face, especially when navigating access to care and insurance coverage.”
Limb loss occurs for many reasons, including trauma, cancer, infections, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and vascular conditions. National Limb Loss Awareness Month is centered around understanding the causes of limb loss while emphasizing prevention strategies, early medical care, and healthy lifestyle choices that may reduce the risk of amputation.
A major focus of the month is celebrating resilience and highlighting the strength of individuals who adapt to life after limb loss. Many people with limb loss pursue careers, athletics, and creative passions while advocating for accessibility and representation.
Advances in prosthetic technology, rehabilitation therapies, and adaptive sports have significantly improved quality of life aspects, fostering greater independence and enabling more active engagement in everyday activities. By sharing personal stories and successes, the observance helps challenge misconceptions and reduce the stigmas surrounding disabilities.
Community involvement is also an integral part of National Limb Loss Awareness Month. Hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, and nonprofits often host educational events, support groups, and awareness campaigns. To support the efforts, participants are able to wear orange which is the official color of limb loss awareness.
National Limb Loss Awareness Month shows the importance of compassion, accessibility, and continued advocacy. Raising awareness helps ensure individuals with limb loss have access to the advances mentioned in health care, rehabilitation services, prosthetic technology, in addition to the community support. By promoting understanding and inclusion, observing the month encourages society at large to recognize ability rather than limitation and to build environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
The O&P program based in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania is committed to creating an environment of belonging, well-being and respect while challenging O&P students to seek excellence through interprofessional education and evidence-based research and practice.
