Low Vision Resident at The Eye Institute: Kylie Auman

Kylie selfieHi!! I am Kylie Auman. I am currently the Low Vision Rehabilitation resident at The Eye Institute (TEI)! I am very passionate about low vision, cats, Ariana Grande, Sephora makeup and the color pink! My home town is Saint Marys, Pa.  Saint Marys is a very small and quaint town that boasts more deer and wildlife than people! I attended Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. where I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in biology. I played tennis in college and I love being competitive!

I completed the Accelerated Scholars Doctor of Optometry program at the Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry in May 2018. I knew when I graduated optometry school that I wanted to continue learning and developing my skills in a residency program. I fell in love with low vision during my fourth year of optometry school (and I owe my love of low vision to the wonderful low vision doctors at the Feinbloom Low Vision Center at TEI)!

I am going to walk you guys through a typical day in my shoes! My days are usually high-energy and fast-paced with lots of laughs! As a resident, I rotate through various services such as Neuro, Retina, Glaucoma and Primary Care. However, most of my days are spent in the Low Vision department so I will focus on that!

Kylie and her catIn the morning, I wake up early and spend some time with my tuxedo cat, Pierogi. He just loves to purr at my feet and meows until I carry him around my apartment! Then I get ready for the day, pack my lunch, eat breakfast and head to TEI. I typically get to TEI about one hour before patient care starts-this allows me to finish up charts, call patients, etc. I am very type A so I usually have a long list of things to do before my actual day of patient care begins!

In the mornings, I review the patients that are coming into clinic that day with our fourth year students and low vision staff. We discuss each patient for the day with our doctors, students, social workers and rehabilitation staff to better understand their functional needs and low vision goals! I spend the majority of my morning precepting the fourth-year low vision Optometry students. I just love teaching the students and learning with them! I grow so close to my fourth-year interns and we often share many jokes and laughs throughout the day!

After patient care is complete in the morning, I try to grab a quick bite to eat! I pack my lunch every day (due to my love of organization, I have all of my lunches and dinners made the weekend before for quick meals during the week)! Also over lunch, I try to finish patient charts, organize some notes or do some light reading.

Kylie and her friendDuring the afternoon, I again work with the fourth-year students in the low vision clinic. When I am done with patient care, I typically have a resident conference. We meet a few days per week with some of the TEI clinical faculty to discuss topics in retina, cornea, emergency, etc. After conference, I usually go home and meet my fiancé, Vinny, for dinner. He is in medical school so making our schedules align can be difficult at times! In the evening, I usually try to relax! I enjoy watching Shameless, Food Network and Keeping up with the Kardashians! Then it’s time to crawl into bed with Pierogi!

On the weekends, I either work in Primary Care at TEI or do something fun! If I’m not working, I usually am shopping at the King of Prussia mall, going to the gym, cooking or visiting family!

I am so glad that I chose to complete my low vision residency at TEI at Salus. I have been having an amazing experience! I am learning from faculty and students every day and I couldn’t be happier of my decision to pursue residency training! I am also very close with my co-residents which makes work that much more fun and enjoyable!
