Third-Year Audiology Student: Erica Guberman

My name is Erica Guberman and I am a third-year Audiology student.

Here's what a day in my life looks like:

audiologist treating a patientMy externship at South Florida ENT in Miami has been both fast-paced and rewarding. Each day, I work with a wide variety of patients performing videonystagmography (VNG) for those experiencing dizziness and balance concerns, and conducting hearing tests on patients of all ages. The busy nature of the clinic keeps me engaged and challenged, and I’m constantly building on my vestibular and audiology skills. No two days are ever the same, and that variety keeps me motivated and excited to learn.

One of the most valuable aspects of my experience has been collaborating with the otolaryngologists (ENTs) and audiologists. I learn something new every day from observing their approaches and working alongside them to provide the best possible care. Because so many of our patients are Spanish-speaking, I’ve also been working on my Spanish so I can connect more effectively. It’s been both challenging and rewarding to step outside my comfort zone in this way, and it has reminded me how important communication is to patient care.

This externship has not only strengthened my clinical skills but also helped me grow personally. I’m learning to adapt in a high-volume clinic, balance efficiency with compassion, and work as part of a collaborative health care team. Each day I leave the clinic with new knowledge and confidence, grateful for the experiences shaping me into a stronger and more well-rounded audiologist.
