Why did you choose Speech-Language Pathology?
I chose Speech-Language Pathology because I have always had a passion for helping people and making communication more accessible to them. My journey began in Palestine, where I studied this field and worked with children with communication difficulties. That experience showed me how powerful communication is, not only for the child, but for the entire family.
When I moved to the United States, I knew I wanted to continue in this field, but I was specifically looking for a program that would help me deepen my clinical skills more than just focus on research. That is what led me to Drexel.
What attracted me most to Drexel’s program was its strong emphasis on hands-on clinical training starting from the first semester, along with a full year of externship experience. I was looking for a program that would truly prepare me for real-life practice, and I felt that Drexel offers exactly that.
From the first time I visited the Elkins Park Campus, I felt welcomed and supported. The faculty and environment made a strong impression on me, and I could see myself growing both professionally and personally in this setting. Being close to where I live has also made a meaningful difference for me, especially as a mother balancing graduate studies and family life.
Today, I continue to build on my experience by working closely with families and supporting parents in understanding their children’s communication. Drexel is helping me strengthen my clinical skills so I can expand this impact and provide more effective, culturally responsive support.
I chose this field, and Drexel, because I believe communication is more than words. It is connection, identity, and the foundation of how we experience the world.
