Mariah Flores, Orthotics & Prosthetics

Why did you choose Orthotics & Prosthetics?

Mariah and her family at the white coat ceremonyI chose Drexel University, Elkins Park Campus, because it was the first of four universities to accept me, and from the moment I interviewed I felt genuinely welcomed. With the program being fairly new, I knew I could reach my fullest potential here and truly build my voice.

As a Hispanic woman entering a field where only about 3% of orthotics & prosthetics clinicians share my background, this journey has always been about more than a career; it’s about representation. We need more clinicians who look like the patients they serve. Being bilingual allows me to connect with patients in ways a translator simply can’t. I’ve watched my own family face language barriers that affected their health care, something I refuse to let happen on my watch. That 3% will change, and I’m proud to be part of that change here at Drexel.
