Why did you choose Speech-Language Pathology?
I chose Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) because I strive to advocate for individuals with communication disorders. I am surrounded by healthcare workers in my family, including my dad who works in the profession of occupational therapy, my older sister who works as a registered nurse, and my older cousin who introduced me to the profession of speech-language pathology. Speech-language pathology stood out to me because communication is the basis of human connection and identity. I want to help individuals gain or regain their ability and confidence to share their opinions and needs.
Three summers ago, I visited my extended family in the Philippines and met my younger cousin for the first time who is autistic and nonverbal. I witnessed her frustration in not being able to express her thoughts and the impact this had on my extended family. This strengthened my desire to serve individuals with communication difficulties so they can develop the ability to build meaningful connections with their loved ones and others.
Moreover, I chose Drexel University because of its strong emphasis on early exposure to diverse clients through the on-campus Speech-Language Institute (SLI) starting in our first semester. I also admired the supportive and driven faculty members in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology. I value Drexel University’s commitment to providing students with extensive opportunities to become confident clinicians. I look forward to my journey in following my passion and growing as a clinician at Drexel University, Elkins Park Campus!
