My schedule changes from day to day, so here's a typical Thursday in my life!
5:20 a.m.: Time to wake up, get ready for the day, pack my lunch, and eat my breakfast!
6:20 a.m.: I have about a 30–40-minute commute to my outpatient pediatric rehab placement.
7:00 a.m.: Arrive at my externship, review my plans for the morning, and prepare materials/toys for the scheduled sessions.
7:15 a.m.: Time to grab my first client from the waiting room! At peds rehab, we see children with various needs, including articulation, language, fluency, apraxia, AAC, etc.
7:45 a.m.: After my first session, I bring the child back to the waiting room and debrief the caregiver(s). I share the activities completed, the goals targeted, and how the child performed during the session.
8:00 a.m.: I quickly change over the room for client #2 and pick them up in the waiting room. On our way back to the treatment room (with every client), we always stop to sanitize our hands as part of our infection control procedures.
8:30 a.m.: Another post-session debrief! During this time, I also wipe down toys from the already completed sessions and set up for clients later in the morning. At peds rehab, we always sanitize toys after use!
8:45 - 10:15 a.m.: During this window of time, I see two more clients and debrief their sessions. These two appointments are back-to-back.
10:15 a.m.: Time to type up the notes from this morning’s sessions.
11:00 a.m.: See my last client this morning and debrief the family. Last little push until lunch!
11:30 a.m.: Finish typing up all morning notes and forward them to my supervisor for approval.
12:00 p.m.: Time for lunch! I usually get about an hour, but I try to eat for half of it and prepare for the afternoon during the last 30 minutes.
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.: See my last two clients for the day and debrief both. These are back-to-back sessions as well!
2:00 - 4:00 p.m.: I use this time to catch up on documentation and work on my end-of-semester presentation. I will present to PT, OT, and Speech on AAC (alternative and augmentative communication) access methods.
4:00 p.m.: Drive home.
5:00 - 7:00 p.m.: Log on to Zoom for class. On Thursday nights, we have Autism Spectrum Disorders.
7:00 - 9:30 p.m.: Time to decompress, get ready for bed, and go to sleep!
